VAT is a tax that is charged on the sale of goods and services in the Uk.

There are currently three UK VAT rates. These are Known as the standard rate (20%), reduced rate (5%) and zero rate (0%). Different items will be classed in these categories.

Most companies in the UK will need to charge VAT and therefore add 20% on to the products and services they sell. However, unless your company has applied for VAT registration, it will not be allowed to do this.

How do I register?

VAT Exemption

There are some goods and services on which VAT is not charged which are referred to as VAT Exempt. Some examples are fund raising events, education and insurance.

VAT Returns

Once you have registered for VAT you are now required to complete vat returns either monthly, quarterly or annually.

As of April 2012, all tax returns will be submitted online.
